Simply put, A Good Deed Tea is giving circle – And an organization about which I am quite passionate. It is a group of women who gather quarterly in active support of causes we choose – With one common thread – To better lives for women and girls around the world.
We host A Good Deed Tea gatherings in order to increase awareness, within our membership, of the causes we support, and each decide where we would like our individual donations to go, within the causes that we as a group have selected. You may wonder about our back-story…
Started in San Francisco
It all began in 2009 and all stemmed from a single. afternoon tea attended by Caterina Rando, Valerie Camarda, and C.J. Hayden. Like many great ideas, this one was inspired by an pivitol event. Caterna, Valerie and CJ where attendees at a tea where they were invited to contribute a gift of $100 to help free a Nepalese girl from indentured servitude and send her to school. This afternoon of tea and good deeds sparked what was to become A Good Deed Tea.
Good ideas, however, require action! Thanks to the enthusiasm that ensued on the ride home that auspicious day, and the innate tendency of these women to seize upon a great idea when they see it, A Good Deed Tea was born. The first official A Good Deed Tea event was hosted by Valerie Camarda shortly thereafter and the rest, as they say, is history!
Idea at the Heart of A Good Deed Tea
A Good Deed Tea is focused on “furthering the education and economic empowerment of women and girls in the developing world… We donate 100% of our funds directly to the causes we select… The causes we donate to report back to us how our funds are spent, and we share these reports at our teas with videos, photos, hands-on examples, or written updates.”
Because we pool our donated resources, we are able to make a greater, targeted impact than we could as individual donors. Because we enjoy getting together in the company of other women and it makes for a fun time, because immersing ourselves in great conversation and sharing ideas comes naturally to our members, because we all have a passion for doing what we can to uplift the lives of women and girls around the world – For all these reasons A Good Deed Tea is alive and well here in the Bay Area: Community ~ Philanthropy ~ Impact
A Good Deed Tea – A Quarterly Event
In 2014 we had group teas in January, April, July and October. We have met at the Tal-y-Tara Tea and Polo Shoppe in San Francisco, and private homes in Foster City and Berkeley. As of the publishing of this post A Good Deed Tea has raised close to 14K, which we have dispersed to the causes we support in Zambia, Nepa, and India . They include the Power of Love Foundation’s Women Entrepreneurs’ Program, TRIFC’s Deaf Women’s Empowerment Group, and the Sakhi for Girls Education.
When donations are totaled from our October 2014 Tea, it is likely we will be close to $18K for the year. That is indeed a great deal of good!
